A finch-sized flint cottage offering vintage style and luxurious comfort in North Norfolk

A finch-sized flint cottage offering vintage style and luxurious comfort in North Norfolk.

spink (spɪŋk) NOUN 1. a finch

Over two years in the making, and using curated, reclaimed and vintage materials and objects, Spinks Nest is the very definition of rustic luxe; It has an old gardener's flint cottage vibe, which will surprise and delight you the minute you open the front door: the colours, textures, scents, warmth, light and sheer elan will leave you smitten.

Spinks Nest juxtaposes rustic textures and materials with luxurious upholstery and fabrics: exposed ancient flint walls, lime-rendered walls, reclaimed oak beams, bricks and Norfolk pamments, sit next to Mulberry Home fabrics, Designers's Guild bedlinen and towels, and a Woolroom wool mattress and bedding.

The kitchen is perfectly-formed and high-spec with a zinc worktop, powerful induction hob, micro-combi oven and large fridge freezer. The bathroom is surely the most characterful bathroom in Norfolk, with a sunken micro-cement bath-for-2, reclaimed iroko old-fashioned toilet seat and reclaimed basin. It’s a delightful place for lovers, young or old!

A woodburner keeps the two reclaimed armchairs cosy in the colder months as does the underfloor heating throughout; in spring you can throw open the top half of the stable door and listen to owls hooting as you relax.

The surrounding hamlet dates back to the Domesday Book, but thankfully the local pub – a quick wander up the road – is a modern gastro affair. And you’re within easy distance of North Norfolk’s highlights for day trips: vast sandy dunes, shingle beaches, and the famous marshes for circular walks amongst postcard-perfect views.

You’ll find several types of tea, a Nespresso machine (with coffee capsules), and many of the basics for cooking in the pantry. Your bed's mattress (small steps provided) is made of wool and the bed linen is gorgeous; luxuriant plants give the sunken bath a greenhouse feel. You’re deep in the Glaven Valley so walks are glorious but you’re also very near the marshes at Cley and Salthouse for magnificent birdwatching, and the coast for long beaches with huge skies.

We are dog friendly and are very happy to welcome your four legged friends, however please note that they are not allowed to be left on their own in the cottage.

Parking

  • Free parking (outdoor)

Please park on the road outside of Spinks Nest, or close by the hedge. Please do not attempt to drive down the path as it is too small to drive down - and there is also nowhere to park there.

Please do not park on the other side of the road.

There is also off-road parking on the lawns outside of the village hall, which is a one minute walk away. The village hall is further down Kings Street on the left.

Nearby

Hunworth is an ancient hamlet mentioned in the Doomsday Book. The cluster of buildings that Spink's Nest is part of is around 250 years old, maybe older in parts. However, there are older, much older, buildings in Hunworth. The medieval church, St Lawrence, dates in parts back to the 14th century. Hunworth Hall hails from the late 17th century. 18th century Hunworth Mill is one of several old watermills along the River Glaven, including one restored to working order at Letheringsett, which can be visited.

The Glaven Valley is home to the River Glaven, a chalk stream of around 10 miles' length. It eventually runs into the sea at the marshes at Cley and Blakeney. It is home to an array of flora and fauna, notably kingfishers, otters, crayfish, water voles, and many more. Much work has been undertaken recently to restore parts of the river to its ancient meandering forms, some of it in Hunworth - allowing it to flood ancient meadows.

North Norfolk is home to vast marshes and huge skies. The shoreline - intermittently made up of shingle beaches and miles of sandy dunes - as well as ancient woodlands, make North Norfolk a special place. There are miles of walks on foot (including some National Trails walks, Peddars Way and Norfolk Coast Path), by bike, as well as via bridal paths. It is an area of no little elegance either, dubbed the "Champagne Coast", and boasts many lovely hamlets, villages, and towns. Burnham Market and Holt, both of which are home to elegant shopping, including many fine art galleries, home stores, clothes ships, and antique markets.
